Impact of Social Media Platforms Use on Library Services Performance in Selected Secondary Schools in Ogun State.
Abstract
Despite the universal adoption of social media for the performance of various services, particularly in the education sector, the use of social media for library services performance in Ogun State seems to be low. This study sets out to investigate the use of social media platforms as an indicator of library services performance in selected secondary schools in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria. The study is anchored on the uses and gratifications theory (UGT) and the information literacy theory. The study employed descriptive survey research design, targeting SSS1 to SSS3 students from Molusi College (Senior), Obanta Comprehensive High School (Senior) and Methodist High School (Senior). A sample of 300 respondents was selected through the use of stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that social media is widely used to promote library services. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity and limited digital tools hinder its effectiveness. Students were aware of library services through social media promotions; but better engagement could be achieved with more interactive content. The study concluded that enhancing digital infrastructure, providing training, and fostering collaboration between librarians and educators would improve social media’s role in promoting library services. The study recommended that schools invest in digital tools, offer training, and adopt engaging content to maximise social media’s potential.
